All children are different, and so are all spaces for active learning (SAL). They are based on the individual child’s needs and preferences. It’s a space:

  • Where a child can make things happen on their own.
  • For teachers to watch for patterns, preferences, and problem solving in the child.
  • That changes over time from smaller to bigger.
  • Where children are in different positions depending on their preference.

Connecting SAL to Communication

Children need multiple opportunities to experience things and events in their own way and at their own pace.  The following videos show three different children using an SAL.  The first two children are using an SAL for the first time.  The third video shows how an SAL can progress and grow over time with the individual. Follow the links at the bottom of the page for more information and helpful resources!

  • What body movements indicate she is active/ alert/ engaged?

  • Does she seem more engaged in the car seat or the SAL? Why?

  • What are the biggest differences in the child’s behavior?

  • How does the SAL create more learning opportunities for the child?

  • Why is reducing background noise and other stimuli important?

Alyssa

In this video, you will see Alyssa in two different environments: a baby carrier and a Space for Active Learning.  This is her first time in an SAL. Both environments are intended to encourage Alyssa to explore and reach out.  The differences and benefits to SAL are discussed.

  • Why does the child prefer the chair to the floor?

  • Which hand and foot do they use?

  • How do you fit making the experience book with the student into your daily schedule?

  • Would you say they were acting intentionally?

  • What is reinforcing their actions with the bell?

First SAL Experience

In this video, a child has their first SAL experience. The parents were having trouble getting them to engage and play with things.  Once the SAL was introduced, the child was more engaged and made intentional actions.  She played for 30 minutes during her first session!

  • How did the spaces change over time?

  • How did Christopher change over time? Are they stationary or moving to objects as the spaces get bigger?

  • If you know a student using an SAL, how can you change it to help them further explore their world?

My Space: Christopher

In this video, Christopher shows us four different SAL’s.  As Christopher grew, so did the size and complexity of his SAL’s.  The importance of variability and growth in the SAL is discussed.
